Beyond standard production cigars, Habanos S.A. maintains an extensive portfolio of special release programs. These limited-quantity offerings feature unique vitolas, specially aged tobacco, distinctive packaging, commemorative bands, or exclusive distribution channels. They command premium prices on both primary and secondary markets and are a major draw for collectors worldwide.

Standard Production

Current Production: Regular production cigars remain in continuous factory output and are commercially available worldwide. Not every vitola is manufactured every year, but all remain available for distributors to order and will be produced whenever inventory runs low.

Discontinued Production: Officially confirmed by Habanos S.A. as no longer available for distributor orders. Some vitolas may have ceased production years before formal discontinuation, while others may continue to be rolled for a year or two after the official date to fulfill standing orders and exhaust remaining packaging stock. Many discontinued cigars remain obtainable at a premium through the vintage market.

Limited Edition Series (Edicion Limitada)

Launched in 2000, the Limited Edition program features vitolas not available in current production. Initially, these cigars were distinguished by two-year-old aged wrapper leaves from the upper portion of the plant, producing a notably darker appearance. Since 2007, all tobacco -- wrapper, binder, and filler -- is aged for a minimum of two years before rolling.

Edición Limitada band

The early years of the program saw four or five different releases annually. No releases appeared in 2002, likely due to scheduling complications and insufficient aged wrapper stock. Since 2005, three cigars per year has been the norm, with occasional exceptions. Each Limited Edition cigar typically carries two bands: the standard brand band plus a distinctive black-on-gold "Edicion Limitada" band bearing the release year (the inaugural 2000 release omitted the date).

Notable releases span the full breadth of the Habanos portfolio, from the landmark Cohiba Piramides (2001) through the Cohiba Talisman (2017), the Cohiba 55 Aniversario (2021), and the most recent offerings for 2024 and 2025 including the H. Upmann Magnum Finite and Montecristo Elba.

Regional Edition Series (Edicion Regional)

Introduced in 2005, this program gives distributors an annual opportunity to commission exclusive cigars for their market. The cigars must use a standard current-production factory size not already offered under the chosen brand. Since 2016, regions cannot commission from the same brand in consecutive years.

Edición Regional band

Distributors initiate each release by proposing a concept to Habanos, who will accept or reject it. The minimum order is 25,000 cigars, paid for upfront. If specialty packaging is desired, the distributor sources it independently. Habanos produces three prototype blends, and the distributor selects the winner. A second production batch may follow the year after the initial release.

Regional Edition cigars normally wear two bands: the standard brand band plus a red-and-silver band reading "Exclusivo" with the region name in Spanish. Early releases used a generic band without the region name. Originally, the ten Global and Niche brands were excluded from this program. Following the 2019 brand reclassification, Cuaba and San Cristobal became eligible, while the status of Trinidad remains unclear. Hundreds of Regional Editions have been released across dozens of markets worldwide since the program's inception.

Reserve Series (Reserva)

Established in 2003, the Reserve program features standard production sizes rolled with specially selected tobacco aged at least three years. These cigars carry a Reserva second band alongside their standard brand band and are presented in special lacquered boxes at premium price points. Releases alternate biennially with the Grand Reserve series.

Releases have included Cohiba Coronas Especiales, Esplendidos, and Robustos (2003, 2018); Partagas Serie D No.4 (2005); Montecristo No.4 (2007) and Edmundo (2022); Romeo y Julieta Churchill (2012) and Short Churchills (2024); H. Upmann No.2 (2014); Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 (2016); and Bolivar Belicosos Finos (2020).

Grand Reserve Series (Gran Reserva)

Launched in 2009, the Grand Reserve takes the concept further with tobacco aged a minimum of five years before rolling. Presented in specially numbered lacquered boxes with Gran Reserva second bands, these are among the most premium offerings in the Habanos catalog. Like the Reserve series, releases appear every other year.

The roster includes Cohiba Siglo VI (2009) and Esplendidos (2023), Montecristo No.2 (2011), Partagas Lusitanias (2013) and Serie E No.2 (2021), Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills (2015), H. Upmann Sir Winston (2017) and Magnum 50 (2025), and Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona (2019).

Habanos Collection (Coleccion Habanos)

Since 2001, this series has featured large-format cigars packaged in numbered boite nature boxes styled as books. The inaugural release contained 10 cigars, but most subsequent editions hold 20. Production runs range from 300 to 2,000 books. After the first ten brands had each been featured, the eleventh edition (2011) presented a retrospective selection of three cigars from each of the preceding ten releases. The cycle then restarted with new cigars from the same ten brands in the original sequence.

Vintage Series

Introduced in 2024, this series replaced the Aged Habanos (Habanos Anejados) program. Regular production cigars are stored under ideal conditions in Cuba for five years or longer, then inspected, repackaged into special boxes, and released to market. A tiered band system indicates the aging period:

  • Vintage 5 (silver band): Aged 5 to 9 years
  • Vintage 10 (gold bronze band): Aged 10 to 14 years
  • Vintage 15 (gold band): Aged 15 to 19 years
  • Gran Vintage 20 (large gold glitter band): Aged 20 years or more

The inaugural 2024 release was the Trinidad Fundadores Vintage 10.

Millennium Reserve (Reserva del Milenio)

Released in February 1999 to commemorate the new millennium, this series was packaged in ceramic jars of 25 cigars with special "Millennium 2000" bands. Production comprised 10,000 Cohiba jars, 10,000 Montecristo jars, and 4,000 Cuaba jars -- totaling 24,000 jars. Approximately 17,000 were released initially, with the balance arriving in late 2002 after replacement jars were sourced to resolve lid imperfections in the original batch.

La Casa del Habano Exclusives

La Casa del Habano is a worldwide franchise chain, with the first location opening in Cancun, Mexico in 1990. Cigars exclusive to these stores are produced on an ongoing basis in somewhat smaller quantities than standard production, and since around 2006 they have carried a distinctive brown second band. The franchise operates in various structures depending on the region: some stores are owned by exclusive distributors, others by individual franchisees, and those within Cuba are typically run by Habanos S.A. itself.

Habanos Specialist Exclusives

Developed around 2012, the Habanos Specialist designation is awarded to independent tobacconists meeting specific criteria for Cuban cigar range, storage conditions, and staff training. Approximately 500 stores worldwide hold this status. Exclusive cigars for this channel are produced indefinitely in limited quantities, and since 2016 they have worn a distinctive gold band.
