Unlike most traditional full-bodied offerings from the legendary marca, the Montecristo Eagle serves as a flagship vitola within the brand's innovative Open series. Released in 2009, this cigar was crafted specifically to appeal to a new generation of cigar enthusiasts seeking a more approachable smoking experience.

Background and Development

When Habanos S.A. conceived the Montecristo Open line, the goal was to create something distinct from the marque's celebrated classic offerings. The entire Open collection was formulated with a lighter flavor profile in mind, marketed toward what the company described as "sporty outdoor smokers" — those who enjoy a quality cigar during leisure activities without the intensity of traditional Cuban blends.

Interestingly, during development, the series was originally designated under the "Sport" name, with the Eagle specifically planned to be called "Mónaco." The eventual rebranding to "Open" and "Eagle" gave the line a more sophisticated identity while maintaining its accessible character.

The Eagle also introduced a completely new vitola to the Cuban cigar catalog, showcasing the significance of this release in expanding the Montecristo portfolio.
